San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, was voted the best city in the WORLD for the first time as of 2017. Now that I have been, I can see why! The cobblestone streets, stunning architecture, vibrant colors, and so much culture, it’s no wonder why this hidden gem is becoming not so hidden. I never heard of this place until our close friends decided to get married here and now I can’t recommend this place enough!
If you want a destination wedding, I highly recommend this place! I have never experienced such a fun, cultural, most beautiful, over the top wedding… the best part is the cost! Let’s just say if they would have gotten everything they did here in the states they would have easily spent $60,000+ … they didn’t even spend a quarter of that! Not to get too much off topic but now that I am married and know how expensive everything is… I was truly blown away! If you want more details I can probably get my friend to give me specifics, just comment below!
GETTING TO SAN MIGUEL MEXICO
We flew into Mexico City. Home of 21.2 million people making it the largest metropolitan area of the world’s western hemisphere! Flying in was an incredible sight. You see buildings for miles and miles. You would have thought the airport was chaos. However, we had no issues at all. Customs took us about an hour to get through. We decided to rent a car and drive four hours to San Miguel. We started driving around 5pm, which meant lots of traffic. It took us a total of eight hours to get to San Miguel. My friend has been traveling here her whole life and it has never taken that long so don’t worry, just our luck. I didn’t mind our views from the car though. If you prefer not to rent a car, there are many shuttle services that will take you around $50-100 per person.
I could not get over the colors, tight nit cobble stone streets and architecture. I did not get a chance to photograph the most famous view, so here is a photo from the web. Isn’t it just breathtaking!
The rest of the photos were taken by me. The doors of San Miguel are so beautiful and so unique.
My mom would freak, she loves old Volkswagen Bettles. They are everywhere here!
The street art project in Colonia Guadalupe was fun to explore. I recommend taking a walking tour, here. I would have but they were closed the day I went so I just walked around the area.
We spent a day at the La Gruta Spa’s indoor hot spring with all our friends. There is a tunnel that leads you to a stone dome where a small but powerful waterfall fills the pool daily. People will stand under it for a massage. I couldn’t believe they drain/fill up this entire pool everyday.
The night before the wedding our friends had their very own street parade! Giant puppets, mariachi band, dozens of friends and family walked the streets of San Miguel singing and dancing. It’s a traditional thing here and was SO. MUCH. FUN!
Follow me to the most beautiful venue.
Our view taking off to go back home.
This old town from the 1,500’s is so authentic and one of a kind. It’s still a hidden gem so no dealing with massive crowds like Florence or major cities in Italy. Be sure to add this to the top of your Bucket List!
The real question is, when do you plan to visit!? I would love to hear from you! Comment below, Pin, share & subscribe to stay up to date on my latest adventures!
